Now...The short term forecast for western New York. Although skies were partly to mostly sunny across the region this afternoon, a line of showers and thunderstorms was approaching the area from the west. The activity extended from the toronto area, across western lake Ontario, to the niagara peninsula. Meanwhile, widely scattered thunderstorms were breaking out across the southern tier and genesee valley. The storms to our west should reach areas north of buffalo by 330 pm. A strong lake erie wind should keep the heaviest activity north of a buffalo to batavia line. Any of these storms will be capable of producing torrential downpours with poor drainage flooding problems, strong, possibly damaging wind gusts, and hail. Anyone engaged in outdoor activities this afternoon should be prepared to take cover as these storms approach.
